When was the last time you reviewed your auto insurance coverage?

An annual review of your car insurance policy can help determine if you have adequate coverage, which should include coverage for the underinsured and uninsured driver.

Carinsurance.com estimates that more than 10% of all Arizona drivers are uninsured.

You may be a safe, insured driver, but are you protected from uninsured (UM) and underinsured motorists (UIM)? What happens when the person who hits you doesn’t have enough liability coverage? Or, even worse, takes off?

Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage exists to protect you financially from reckless drivers on the road. Compared to liability, comprehensive, and collision, it can be quite affordable.

Underinsured vs. Uninsured-What’s the difference?

UM, coverage protects you if you’re in an accident with an at-fault driver who doesn’t carry liability insurance. You can bet that on your ride home today, you have uninsured drivers around you.

On the other hand, UIM coverage helps out if you’re in an accident with an at-fault driver whose liability limits are too low to cover the damage or medical expenses. Suppose an underinsured driver causes an accident that results in injuries or lost income to you or your passengers. In that case, your insurer will pay for those damages when the other driver’s insurance taps out thanks to this coverage. Without it, the money will have to come out of your pocket. Filing a lawsuit against an uninsured or under-insured driver is often difficult, as there may be little to or nothing to recover.

Numerous insurance companies entertain us with creative ads promoting how much money you could save with them. What they might not tell you is that the savings they promise may not adequately cover you if you are involved with an uninsured or underinsured motorist.

Review your policy with your insurance professional and make sure it includes UM and UIM coverage.
